My cousin Joshua Guedalia has been working to digitize the responsa of the Peri Ets Hayyim. It's really a great (Hebrew) resource for students of S&P history and halakha. https://peh.dicta.org.il/book/prietshaimYou can listen to a podcast about this project here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6SClwL4xOD7cSeeFkQ6ieX?si=9PcVVvihQYCQd6yjtaeoJA
I hesitate to post a solicitation - and apologize to the admins if this is inappropriate. Nevertheless - I hope the members of this group can help with this small - but worthy project. The burial society of Congregation Shearith Israel, the Hebra Hased vaAmet, is seeking to repair and conserve several grave markers at the Chatham Square Cemetery. They've chosen to restore two markers: Walter Jon...
Today (Shevat 7*) is the nahala of Reverend Joseph M. Corcos (1872-1926). He came from a distinguished rabbinical line. Abraham Corcos, his grandfather, had served as a Dayan of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews of England. His mother Julia was the daughter of Abraham M. Rodrigues Brandon of London. He received his rabbinical education in Mogador, Morocco, under Judah BenAttar, was graduate of th...
Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, Paramaribo, Rabbi Roos, 1922.From the papers of David de Sola Pool in the Shearith Israel archives.
This is the seal of Haim Isaac Carigal. It was affixed to an undated letter he wrote to Solomon Simson shortly before he left New York for Newport (c. 1773.) The letter is from the Archives of Shearith Israel.I can make out what looks to be a scale and baskets on either side. But, what is depicted or written in the center is unclear to me. Care to share your best guess as to what it is or what i...
I am looking for information about Jacob Lopes da Fonseca, Haham of Curacao from 1765-1815. I am particularly interested in any religious rulings/responsa he may have issued while serving as Haham. If you know where to look (or who to ask) please let me know. Many thanks
Perhaps someone here can help me access a manuscript. Here is the entry at the National Library: https://www.nli.org.il/en/manuscripts/NNL_ALEPH990052788420205171/NLIAnd here is what I think is the same item in an old catalog of Manuscripts from Amsterdam:https://www.google.com/books/edition/Nederlandsche_geschiedenis_en_plaatsbesc/d8pmAAAAcAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22Sarah%20Fernandez%20Corcos%22&pg=P...
An unusual find in Shearith Israel's burial register: Samuel Benrimo died on the first night of Shabu`ot 5610 (May 16th, 1850 - after sundown. )He was buried the next afternoon - on the first day of shavuot! Something that would never be done today. The note explains that this was done because the second day of Shavuot was Shabbat and he died suddenly with his wife and 9 children in the home. I...
Here is an entry from Shearith Israel's ledger for 1759. 4 Coconuts, 6 lbs of Raisins, 4 lbs of Almonds and 2 Ozs of Cinamon for the Haroseth; & Greens - cost the congregation £1.9.6. Happy Passover from New York!Perhaps one of the esteemed members in this group can let us know what the value of £1.9.6 in 1759 would be in today's currency.Ton Tielen Laura Arnold Leibman
Perhaps of interest to some in this group. Event is tomorrow!
Pdf of Pool's Haggadah (Crazy translations and all) from the pages of his Festival Prayer book. Hope it is helpful.
Here is Mah Nishtana as sung by Leon H. Elmaleh (Minister of Mikveh Israel, Philadelphia from 1898-1927 and minister emeritus until his death in 1972!)Bram Cardozo also recorded this melody - which he calls a NY melody. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrheeDsfJZE
This is a photograph of Isaac Phillips (1812-1889) which I came across in our archives recently. He was a parnas of Shearith Israel from one of Shearith Israel's prominent families (a grandson of Jonas Phillips and father of Capt. N. Taylor Phillips.) He was also a grandmaster of the Masons. His apron was on display a few years ago and can be seen here: https://nymasoniclibrary.org/a-new-1790s-...
Below is a photograph of David Aaron de Sola (1796-1860) - Minister at Bevis Marks- London; translator of the prayer book, compiler of the Ancient Melodies, composer of Adon Olam, etc.) When I first saw it - I thought it was a very famous photograph that I have seen elsewhere; but looking online I was unable to find it elsewhere. Can anyone in this group let me know where else this photo appea...
Does anyone here know where I can see the prayer book of printed by Joseph Attias in Amsterdam (1658)? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
A discussion in a different group has left me with some basic questions about Converso family name conventions. Why did families choose new names either when converting to Christianity or conversely when re-judaizing outside of Spain or Portugal. Was it a requirement for New Christians to change their name from their Jewish origins? Or a way of self preservation? When re-judaizing outside of Sp...
Ezra Gorodesky - a founding member of the S&P congregation in Jerusalem (Shaare Ratson) and a native of Philadelphia's Mikveh Israel passed away today. If you ever prayed at Istanbuli you surely met him. He was always friendly and most interesting. Who could forget his reciting the Dukhan in a top hat in the heat of Jerusalem. A most interesting man who will be greatly missed.
Just came across this album from the tenor/cantor Louis Danto (totally ashkenazic)His renditions of tracks 3, 8 & 9 will be of interest to this group
Anyone here know much about the S&P community of Manchester? or its former synagogue (now a museum?)
I recently received an invitation to this event - Thought it might of interest to others. I have no connection to this event at all:

A question about body position during lecha dodi. Perhaps this has been discussed before: apologies if that is the case:In Shearith Israel (NY) there is a strong custom not to turn your back to the hehal (Ark) - the pews are oriented north and south facing the teba in the center/rear of the sanctuary.Congregants stand up at באי בשלום and face forward (i.e. center - not toward the ark) then bow ...
